Each time the player gains a level they can choose one of 2 books to read. Each book grants some sort of bonus, known as a perk. The two books are selected at random, though some books seem to only become available later in the game. It appears that each book is a reference to a real book, such as the Tell-Tale Heart, The Clockwork Orange and The Count of Monte Cristo.
